5 Essential Winter Vehicle Safety Tips

winter vehicle safety

It’s always smart to keep your vehicle well-maintained to be sure that you can drive safely. However, during the winter months, maintaining your vehicle becomes even more important. Cold weather and winter storms can disable or damage your vehicle, especially if you don’t practice proper vehicle maintenance. Here are some tips you can follow to improve the safety of your vehicle for winter driving.

Winter Driving Safety Tips: 1. Get Your Vehicle Inspected.
Too often, it may be tempting to put off your vehicle inspection until it fits conveniently into your busy schedule. However, in order to make sure that your vehicle is adequately prepared for driving in winter weather conditions, it’s important that you have it inspected as soon as possible. If your vehicle’s inspection deadline is not for several months, you may want to have a mechanic perform general maintenance and inspection. This is usually fairly inexpensive, as long as you choose a trusted mechanic.

Winter Driving Safety Tips: 2. Purchase Snow Tires.
To improve your car’s traction on slippery winter roads, you may want to purchase snow tires. There are many different snow tires available, which may or may not be studded. Choose a trusted tire company that sells a highly rated brand of snow tires, in order to make sure that you get the most for your money. Having studded snow tires may slightly decrease your gas mileage, though they often are the best way to improve the traction of a lightweight vehicle.

Winter Driving Safety Tips: 3. Check Your Tire Pressure.
Having your tires properly inflated can significantly improve the way your car handles on the road. In winter driving conditions, this can be extremely important. Most gas stations offer manual tire inflation for less than $5, which usually also includes a device to check your tire pressure. The ideal pressure for your tires is usually branded on the side of your tire, so that it can be easily checked while inflating.

Winter Driving Safety Tips: 4. Use Dry Gas on a Regular Basis.
In order to prevent a gas-line freeze, it’s important that you treat the gas in your vehicle’s tank with dry gas. This can help remove excess water, which is the largest contributing factor to a gas line freeze. Most gas stations offer dry gas in the auto supply section, or it can be purchased in bulk at many grocery stores.

Winter Driving Safety Tips: 5. Keep Your Gas Tank Full.
Another way to decrease the chance that your vehicle’s gas line will freeze is to keep your gas tank at least half full. When your tank is full, there is a lower chance for condensation to develop in your tank. This means that your gas will not contain as much water, and also decreases the chance that your gas line will freeze during cold weather conditions.
