Alternative Home Security Systems

Aside from the conventional method of installing a commercial home security system, there are many alternative methods that you can use to increase the security of your home. These methods can be used as an introduction to home security, or may also be used in combination with a commercial home security system. In general, a combination of these methods, in addition to the installation of a home security system will be extremely effective in protecting your home from intruders.

Security Gates

To prevent unwanted intruders from gaining access to your home and property, you may choose to install a security gate. These gates are available with a variety of features, and generally vary in expense. A basic security gate is simply designed to provide a barrier, which is usually able to be locked manually. However, if you are looking for a more complex option (and if cost is no object), you can choose a security gate that is remote-operated via voice intercom. These gates are often used for expensive houses, since they giveĀ a homeowner complete remote control over who enters their property. Some of these gates can also be modified to have features such as video surveillance.

Guard Dogs

As a home security system, a properly trained guard dog can be extremely effective. Many burglars are deterred by the presence of a guard dog alone, since it decreases the chances that they will be able to enter your home unnoticed. To properly train a guard dog, it’s important to use socialization training as a first approach. Socialization training is the basis for any dog training routine, though is especially important when training a guard animal. The concept behind socialization is simple – to expose your dog to as many non-threatening situations as possible. Dogs can fear that which they don’t understand, which may create difficulties when training a guard dog. Socialize your dog with “scary” events such as umbrellas, people in hats, passing cars, thunderstorms, loud noises and friendly visitors. Once your dog understands that these events do not present a threat, they will be better able to filter out threatening events, such as an unwanted intruder on your property.

Electronic Guard Dogs

If you aren’t able to keep a dog in your home, you can still help deter burglars with an “electronic guard dog”. These interesting devices are usually motion-activated, and available at many home goods stores. When the motion detector is triggered, the system emits a loud noise that sounds very similar to a threatening dog bark. If a burglar believes that there is a dog inside your home, this may be enough to convince them that your home is not an easy target. You can enhance the ‘electronic’ guard dog system by putting up a “Beware of Dog” sign, or scattering some used dog toys in your front yard.

Fencing

Fencing in your yard and property can be a great alternative method to increase your home’s level of security. Many burglars choose homes that are vulnerable, and that offer a quick getaway. By using fencing, you are creating a useful barrier that may deter thieves from choosing your home for a burglary.

“Gated” Communities

If you live in a “gated” community, you already have a basic measure of security for your home. Gated communities usually require the authorization of a guard, a member of the community or a specific security code in order to gain entry. In some cities, the gated communities are so secure that crime is virtually nonexistent. However, it’s still important to remember that even within a gated community, you still need to take measures to help protect your home’s security.

Unique Options

When it comes to alternative home security, don’t be afraid to be creative! There are many ways to create unique and useful home security systems by using non-conventional methods. A good example of this is choosing to use geese, to protect your home. It may be difficult to believe, but this is actually a method that some people use to protect their home from intruders. Other birds, such as guinea hens, can be useful as “watchdog” animals as well. As a general rule, don’t be afraid to try creative methods to help secure your home against intruders.
