If your home is well-lit, burglars are less likely to risk being seen by attempting to break in to your home.

Don’t ever pay for alarm system equipment or installation. There are enough security companies competing for your business that you should be able to get the standard package of security system equipment and installation for free. You might have to pay for any extra sensors above the standard package limit, but definitely don’t pay for all of it.
Great tip regarding the burglar proof hinges, I’ve never thought about that before. Burglars could break into a closed home so discreetly by removing hinges, its scary!
