Child Locating Devices – A Useful Tool for Parents

Lost Child

It’s a situation that every parent has experienced. You’re shopping in the supermarket, as your energetic toddler crawls around under your feet. You reach up to grab a box of cereal, and suddenly realize that your toddler is gone! Young children are innately curious, with an unparalleled desire to learn everything they can about the world around them. However, this also means that they are prone to wander off when their parents are distracted. Child safety is the most important part of being a good parent, and it’s essential that you do everything in your power to ensure that your child is safe at all times. That being said, is it possible to have peace of mind that you will always be able to find your child when they wander off? With recent development in child safety technology, parents now have many more options to keep their children safe.

Child Locating Devices

To help parents find small children that are prone to wandering off, many commercial companies have developed different types of “Child Locating Devices”. These devices are designed to be attached to a child’s clothes, and the transmitter sends a signal to a receiver that is kept by the parent. Some of the commonly included features in Child Locating Devices include:

Secure Attachment
Though there are a few transmitting devices that use Velcro, most of the devices include a metal safety pin that can be securely fastened to a child’s clothing. This ensures that the device will remain attached, even during active playground exercise.

Child-Friendly Design
To be more visually appealing, most transmitting devices are developed to look like cartoon animals, toys, or other child-friendly designs. This ensures that the transmitting device is fairly inconspicuous, and doesn’t look out-of-place when attached to a child’s clothing.

Distance Alarm
To help a parent to notice when a child is beginning to wander off, most child locating devices are equipped with an alarm that sounds in the receiver held by the parent when their child is going out of range. This beeping is usually from 60 – 80 db, sometimes having an adjustable volume. The range at which the notification alarm will begin beeping is usually adjustable as well, most commonly being activated when a child is from 6 to 30 feet away from the receiving device held by the parent.

Locating Alarm
If a parent is unable to see their child, they may be able to press a button their receiving device in order to sound an 80+ db alarm on their child’s transmitting device. This alarm is usually effective within a range of 150 feet, though this range may vary with the specific type of device. This alarm can be useful to help a parent to locate a child in a crowded area, or to alert people around the child that they are currently lost.

Affordable Price
For such a useful child safety tool for parents, child locating devices are fairly inexpensive. Most child locating devices are usually priced from $25 – $35 USD. Both the transmitter and receiver require batteries, usually a mini 12 V battery and two Lithium Ion watch batteries (usually from $1 – $3 each).
