Magnetic Door Sensor – How It Works

by Carolyn · 0 comments

Door Sensor

This generation of home security systems are incredibly sophisticated, blending years of technological advancements with ingenuity and functionality. However, some security system components still rely on devices that were discovered over 2,500 years ago. These components were used extensively in Ancient China, India and Greece. This incredible device plays an important role in many of the electronics that we use each day. Today, we know this amazing device as the magnet.

Magnetic door sensors are used by many home security systems, and are also sometimes sold as stand-alone components that can be self-installed. Just like with any other electrical device, not all magnetic door sensors are created equal. What’s incredibly interesting about these sensors, is how they use magnetism in order to create an effective security device.

Magnetic Door Sensor Components

For a magnetic door sensor that is connected to a monitored security system, there are several key components that allow this device to work properly. These components include:

Control Panel
In order for the alert from the magnetic door sensor to be processed and transmitted, it needs to be interpreted by the control panel. Since many magnetic door sensors are wireless, they transmit a wireless signal back to the control panel unit.

Battery
Most wireless magnetic door sensors are powered by an included battery. Depending on the type of system, this battery may be rechargeable, or may need to be manually replaced. Some magnetic door sensors will have an indicator light that lets you know when the battery needs to be replaced or recharged.

Magnets
In most cases, there are two magnets included in a wireless magnetic door sensor. Depending on the placement of these magnets, the sensor will be able to function effectively.

How it Works

The two magnets included in the sensor are placed a short distance apart. One of the magnets is placed on the door, while the other is usually placed on the door frame. The magnets need to be spaced properly, in order to ensure that they have a magnetic connection. The sensor monitors the integrity of the connection between the two spaced magnets. If that connection is broken, the sensor is triggered, and a signal is sent back to the control panel, which is processed as an alert.

Do I Need A Door Sensor?

Magnetic door sensors are fairly inexpensive, and may sometimes come included with many monitored security system packages. Due to their easy installation, they can be an effective add-on feature for any security system. However, the question of choosing to install a magnetic door sensor is really a matter of personal preference. They are most effective when combined with other security measures, such as a monitored security system, burglar-proof deadbolt locks, window sensors and motion-activated security lights.
