In Framingham, Massachusetts, there was recently a great example of why it pays off to have a video surveillance system in your home. A local resident of the area, after having his home broken into several months before, decided to install his own motion-activated security camera. On December 18th, he got a text message which alerted him that the camera was detecting movement inside his home. After logging onto his homemade surveillance system at work, he saw two men in the process of burglarizing his home.
Immediately, the man called the police, who converged on the residence, and took the two bewildered criminals into custody. Recovered from their possession were a digital camera from the residence, as well as a video game system. According to police reports, the two men had no clue that they were being monitored by a camera during their burglary. The footage from the surveillance camera was also able to be recorded for evidence for the future court trial.
The two men, being named as Kevin John Fegan (27) and Joshua Garcia (18) both had their bail set by a local judge. Of the two, Fegan was stated as being a frequent offender, being convicted 14 times over his 27 years. His bail was set at $11,000, while the younger Garcia’s bail was set at $1,900.
The man whose house was burglarized reportedly set up the surveillance system entirely on his own, using a motion-activated webcam combined with the system being set to send him a text-message alert when any movement was detected. For a do-it-yourself home surveillance system, he was extremely successful in effectively increasing the security of his home. It just goes to show that even a homemade surveillance system can help you to protect your home against burglars. Odds are, criminals will think twice before targeting other residents of Framingham, who may want to follow this citizen crimefighter’s example.
