Safety Tip: Know your neighbors and their routines.
I live in a small town of less than 1,000 people.
Everybody knows everybody.
Sometimes that is annoying, but let me tell you – we’re quick to call the power company for each other when the power goes out, we let people borrow things and they are returned, it really is a peaceful community.
One major benefit to knowing everybody in our little neighborhood is that we have been there long enough to recognize when somebody comes through the town and looks suspicious. We have several police officers that live in or near our town and for some reason that makes the entire city comfortable with calling the police for anything and everything suspicious. Really though, in a town of 1000 (and a neighboring town of 3000), what else are the police going to do?
I think our town is relatively safe because of our neighbors. They know our routines and we know theirs. Sure, we don’t like a couple of our neighbors but that’s natural. It doesn’t mean that we don’t watch out for them in our little town!
Knowing your neighbors has a few benefits:
1. You will know what kind of security precautions you need to take with your own home and family if you know who your neighbors are and their routines.
2. Your neighbors are more inclined to help you if they know you are gone and they see something suspicious.
3. You might make a new friend or two.
4. You will recognize when new people move in or move out, and be able to help them if they have any questions about the neighborhood or community.
