Photogenic Burglar Robs Security Camera Store

CCTV Burglary

The city of Boise is a hub of activity, being the largest city in the entire state of Idaho. With a beautiful art museum built in the 1930′s, to the famous Warm Springs golf course, there are many attractions in this lively city to keep its citizens occupied. However, Boise has another feature, one that has been covered by several news sources – a very unintelligent attempt at burglary.

Allen Michael Darnell may have been a typical 21-year old kid, living in the nearby town of Emmett, Idaho. However, it’s apparent that he didn’t have the intelligence necessary to be a good burglar. One night, he chose the ultimate target for his burglary attempt – A CCTV store.

Allen Michael Darnell, arrested for attempting to burglarize a CCTV store.

The store, called “Computer Central”, specialized in selling several types of electronic equipment. This included printers, personal computers and video surveillance equipment. Allen Michael Darnell smashed in the glass of the front door, entered the store, and attempted to steal some of the electronics.

However, what he didn’t figure out immediately, was that ”Computer Central” was equipped with approximately 14 security cameras, which were designed to cover the interior of the store. Many of the cameras were in visible locations. When Darnell noticed the cameras, he tried to pull his jacket over his head, apparently in order to hide his face. However, for some reason, police said that he would periodically walk over to a camera, and peer into the lens, apparently confused. This captured his image clearly for police.

In the meantime, Darnell was attempting to steal some of the computers that were out for display in the store. However, his burglary was foiled by the fact that the computers were bolted down. He left the store, came back a short time later, even making contact with several witnesses during this time.

After unsuccessfully trying to steal a computer, and staring into several cameras, Darnell had a brilliant plan to cut his losses. He walked over to the cash register, and removed the $250 that was in the drawer. Satisfied that his burglary had been a success, he made his ‘escape’. However, he didn’t go far, and decided to hide in some nearby bushes until police arrived. Once police were on the scene, they spotted Darnell hiding in the bushes, and were able to capture him after a very short chase on foot.

After he was arrested, police had a very easy time identifying Darnell as the person who had smashed in the door of the computer store, and taken money from the register (due to his face clearly appearing on the footage from the security cameras).

“Let’s just say that it helped make the arrest a little easier.”- Lynn Hightower, spokeswoman for the Boise Police Department

Some of the most basic questions (why did this criminal sit and hide in the bushes until police arrived?) about this burglary seem to defy all laws of common sense. However, oddly enough, Darnell isn’t the only criminal who thought robbing a CCTV store was a good idea. The following video captures two men, who try to rob a store named “Kobi C.C.T.V”. Perhaps Allen Michael Darnell has become an idol for other criminals!
