Tips for Home Security

Security systems protect your home, family, and valuables. Some burglars can even be deterred by the sign marking your home as protected. Home security is no longer just for the rich and the famous. Prices have lowered and some companies have made it so consumers can build their own security systems. You can build a security system that fits your needs whether its detectors for floods or security cameras. Installation is also easier and can be done by the consumer. Insurance companies may even lower costs for covering your home if you have a security system.

Fire alarms are a key part to your home security. Monitored fire alarms are different from regular alarms you can buy from your local store. Instead of merely beeping a warning of a fire, a monitored fire alarm will alert your local fire station for quick action. A monitored smoke alarm could save your home and lives.

Don’t just hide your spare key under the welcome mat. There are safer places to put your extra keys. Companies make hollowed rocks that you can hide your house key in. If you have a garden or flowerbed next to your door, the rock will blend right in. You can also use a flowerpot safe. The bottom of the pot unscrews and a jar inside holds your hidden key. You can also hide your keys somewhere in your garage. Just like the flowerpot, companies can make safes out of common things such as engine cleaner.

If you can not afford a security system, follow some of these simple tips to keep your home secure:

  • Use outdoor lighting to illuminate doorways and your entire yard
  • Fix broken windows
  • Always lock your car when you leave it in your driveway
  • Don’t display expensive items. If you have expensive electronic equipment, either leave your blinds closed or put it out of view of people passing by
  • Know your neighbors
  • Keep your yard well maintained
  • If a street light goes out near your home, contact the city so they can repair it
  • Report suspicious people to the police

Which home monitoring company should I go with? I’d love to see a comparison, because I’m pretty much clueless…
